Lose Weight With A Pocketful Of Advice
Weight loss surgery is effective for a large majority of patients on a long-term basis. Typically, most doctors will only perform weight loss surgeries when the patient is 100 pounds or more overweight. Some people will be covered for their lap band surgeries by their insurance, and some will have to pay for it themselves.

If you're dieting, try replacing all beverages with plain water. Most common drinks such as soda, juice, and even tea contain a high amount of calories. Water is inexpensive, calorie-free, and helps to fill you up when you drink it.

Fad diets look like a great idea. However, if you really want to lose weight and keep it off, it's better to stay away from dietary fads. A fad diet that focuses on a certain set of foods may sound interesting at first, but the novelty soon wears off. Even worse, they do not support healthy eating habits. Choose a diet where you can recognize the nutritional benefits of everything you eat.

A good way to help maintain the proper weight is to not eat a few hours before you go to bed. It may be difficult, but remember that, because you will be sleeping, food eaten just before bed will not be burned off and will become fat. If it is difficult to resist the temptation to eat before bed, try to stay busy right up until bedtime. Reading is a great way to get your mind off of food.

Who does not enjoy french fries? You may be surprised by how many of your favorite unhealthy meals and snacks have delicious, healthy alternatives. However, you can have your french fries and still not sabotage your diet by baking instead of frying. Cut your potatoes about a 1/2" thick, put them into a bowl with a tbsp. of oil, then lightly add a pinch of rosemary (optional), salt, and pepper bake one layer for 30 minutes at 400 degrees. Gently lift them so they don't stick, flip them over and then continue baking for about 10 more minutes. These taste great with ketchup, have reduced calories and might make you forget about deep-fried potatoes. This great "French Bakes" recipe is courtesy of Laurel's Kitchen cookbook.

Some people prefer to deal with facts and figures when trying to lose weight. Around 3,500 calories can be found in a single pound of fat. So the formula to losing weight is, for every pound you want to shed, you need to burn 3500 more calories than you take in. To start, you can have a goal of burning 500 calories and work your way up from there. In this way you'll be on track to lose one pound a week.

As many as one-fifth of patients who have weight-loss surgery experience complications serious enough that a second surgery is required to repair the problem. A small percentage of patients wind up having problems getting enough nutrients, and when they lose weight too quickly, they may develop gallstones. Weight loss that is prompted by surgery also requires exercise and a healthy diet.
